‘Hereditary’ was one of the better horror movies I’ve seen in recent years and ‘Midsommar’ was even better IMO, so I can’t wait to check out director Ari Aster’s latest offering ‘Beau Is Afraid’, starring top 5 actor in the world Joaquin Phoenix.
A word of warning from Phoenix himself though – don’t watch the movie while tripping balls (via Fandango):
‘I was told from someone in college that there was this college thread amongst friends, a challenge they were going to take mushrooms and go see this movie. And I just wanted to make a public service announcement and say, do not take mushrooms and go see this fxcking movie.’
He recalled the first time he watched ‘Beau Is Afraid’ with an audience, saying:
‘I was definitely squirming in my seat. First of all, I’m just laughing about the entire fucking movie. There’s a couple of sequences where I’m just squirming – I mean, stuff that [Aster] did with the sound design, it was really great. It’s such a rich world, and there’s so many details to see in it. It is a hundred percent a movie that you feel. There’s so many rich, complex themes in this film, but it’s such a visceral experience to watch it. Then you leave, and when that feeling subsides, you start thinking about it.’
In the movie, Phoenix stars as Beau Wassermann, a paranoid man who confronts his darkest fears and embarks on a journey back home following his mum’s death. Phoenix is great at playing dark, complex characters and that’s exactly what Aster is great at developing, so it sounds like this one can’t miss.
Check out the trailer below:
Hmmm. Seems a bit tame on the face of it, but knowing who’s involved you almost have to expect something crazy to go down.
‘Beau Is Afraid’ is already showing in the US but will be in UK cinemas on May 19. Be warned though – it has a runtime of 2hrs 59m! No one’s attention span runs that long in 2023! It better be good…
