Netflix dropped the trailer for their incoming Jimmy Savile documentary this week, and it’s come under fire basically for just existing, because I guess there are enough Jimmy Savile documentaries out there already that document what a disgusting human being he was. Of course the worst part about the Jimmy Savile allegations is that they came out after he died, aged 84, in 2011. Which meant he was never brought to justice and never had to answer for his crimes.
Here’s some of the reaction online:
No one wanted to talk when he was alive, now you can’t shut anyone up. Haven’t his victims been through enough? The stories already been told.

You know what would be more radical and better? A documentary exploring the victims. Talking to them, and their families and how the police, the bbc, and society failed them.

The day Netflix realise they don’t need to make a documentary just for the sake of it will be a good day indeed. Nobody asked for this. https://t.co/xRGFxEACSz

This shouldn’t have been made ever. We all read the news, don’t revisit this. Pay respect to the victims. Nobody needs to know the worst extent of his abuse. https://t.co/l0VlY2vZqd

Hard to disagree that this is anything but a cash grab by Netflix, which is fair enough considering they’re in the business of creating content that millions of people will watch, even if it’s a story that’s been told a hundred times before. The documentary comes as a BBC drama based on Savile – starring Steve Coogan – is currently in the works, and which will not doubt receive similar backlash. Coogan will play Savile in The Reckoning, a three-part drama due to air this year, which depicts the predator’s rise and the scandal after his death.
