In a move that would have his on-screen dad going absolutely ballistic, actor Jeremy Strong AKA Kendall Roy in Succession has been revealed as a big time climate change activist who has been funding some of the more extreme tactics deployed by groups like Just Stop Oil.
According to their new annual report, Strong is a donor for the Climate Emergency Fund (CEF), which is essentially a collection of activist groups whose aim is to push the climate movement into ’emergency mode’.
Not by planting trees or reminding us to recycle, mind. But rather, by slashing tyres, blocking roads, dousing buildings in paint, gluing themselves to the street, and all that other fun stuff we’ve been seeing over the last few years. A statement from the CEF reads:
We are in an existential climate emergency, and we need to act like it, and initiate a whole society mobilization towards zero emissions as quickly as humanly possible
The Climate Emergency Fund backs grassroots, high-stakes climate activists making headlines all over the world. Recently, some of these groups disrupted the Tour de France and demonstrated near famous artworks in national museums in London.
So obviously it’s good to raise awareness on climate change and the motive may be a good one, but there’s always the argument that these sorts of tactics are counter-productive to the cause, in that it just annoys regular folk who are trying to go about their day in peace, and as such will feel negatively toward the whole thing.
For example, I don’t think this stunt at the World Snooker Championship last month did the movement any favours, do you?

It’s just amusing to think that Jeremy Strong has been funding this kind of activity, as it’s exactly the kind of thing his character in Succession would do (or at least up to the point I’ve watched in Season 3). Just winding up the rest of his family with his new-found wokeness as he lives one of the most privileged lives on the planet thanks to his dad’s media empire. Classic.
