People are freaking out at ‘Wednesday’ star Jenna Ortega after she revealed she had COVID-19 while filming the viral dance scene in the show, which was shot in a crowded room.
Jenna told NME:
“I choreographed that myself! It’s crazy because it was my first day with COVID so it was awful to film.
Yeah, I woke up and – it’s weird, I never get sick and when I do it’s not very bad – I had the body aches. I felt like I’d been hit by a car and that a little goblin had been let loose in my throat and was scratching the walls of my esophagus. They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting on the positive result.”
MGM, the production company behind ‘Wednesday’, confirmed to NME that “strict COVID protocols were followed and once the positive test was confirmed production removed Jenna from set.” But then it can’t have been that strict if they were waiting for confirmation of a positive result and had her film in a packed room in the meantime.
Here’s the sort of reaction the story is getting online:
this is a bad thing right? we all agree that this is not some “persevering through hardship” moment, its a why the fuck didn’t she get sent home, she could get horrendously sick or infect others kinda moment pic.twitter.com/dBlwOf2ulr

jenna ortega filming a whole scene while waiting for her covid test results AND with obvious symptoms isn’t “professional”, it’s just completely irresponsible

I was really pulling for WEDNESDAY to be an unproblematic fave… but I guess that’s not the world we’re in. Damn it.

Seems a bit unfair to have a go at Jenna Ortega about it seeing as she’s just an employee working with Netflix and Tim Burton, but then again she probably should have kept her mouth shut about the whole thing when interviewed by NME. In any case, we’re mostly back to normal, but I guess some people still want to treat COVID like a death sentence and moan at people who aren’t taking it as seriously as them. It’s no fun having COVID either way, but just seems like the reaction to this story is a bit OTT. Isn’t that always the case, though?
Meanwhile, ‘Wednesday’ is also being accused of racism because Tim Burton cast black actors as the show’s bullies. Sigh…
