In the early hours of the 2nd October 2021, 19-year-old Ridhwaan Farouk was on his way to work after catching a lift with his manager to the Selly Oak branch of JD Sports in Birmingham.
As she was giving him a lift, Ridhwaan asked his manager to drive past Middleton Hall Road because he wanted to “see something”. He didn’t say why he wanted to go there but his manager found it a bit odd because she’d seen social media posts that came out hours earlier which told the public to avoid that same road due to an ‘ongoing incident’.
She asked him: “What have you done Ridhwaan? Is something up?”. Ridhwaan replied “It was me and my brother. It wasn’t even my beef, it was my brother’s beef.”
As they pulled up to Middleton Hall Road, police were everywhere and news was breaking out that a lad named Amin Talea had been murdered. Ridhwaan said to his manager: “F*ck I’m gonna go down for this, I feel sick. Look all that happened was, we took a taxi to Overbury Road, walked to Amin’s flat and waited for him to come out.”
His manager asked: “Why are you telling me this Ridhwaan?”, to which he replied: “Look, I trust you. You won’t tell anyone. I know you.”
Well those turned out to be famous last words because once they got to work, his manager immediately consulted other colleagues and then called the police who promptly turned up and had Ridhwaan arrested:
This is the moment a murder suspect was detained and quizzed by police officers as he was greeting customers while working his shift at JD Sports.

Ridhwaan and his brother Mohammed have now both been found guilty of murder and jailed for life. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the brothers stabbed Amin on his doorstep after ambushing him. Obviously great news, but what I’m trying to wrap my head around is what Ridhwaan was thinking confessing everything to his manager the morning after the murder. Did he think she would find it cool or something? I just don’t understand asking your boss to drive you to the scene of a murder you committed and then trusting them with all the details when they’re already baffled enough as it is.
Maybe Ridhwaan wanted to get caught, and this was his way of doing it? Could be the guilt was eating him up and he wanted to hand himself in, in a roundabout sort of way. Or maybe he’s just stupid – who knows? You just can’t give someone that sort of information and expect them not to say anything. Not just brainless, but totally unfair too. Big up the manager at Selly Oak JD Sports for doing the right thing. Let’s hope the outcome has brought Amin’s friends and family some peace.
