It’s been over a month now since Jay Slater’s body was found in Tenerife, putting an end to all the rumours that he’d been kidnapped and/or murdered by Spanish gangsters. One rumour that has persisted though is that Jay Slater stole a man’s £12,000 Rolex on the eve of his disappearance, which he had supposedly ‘admitted to pals’ over Snapchat as he tried to sell the watch.

Now, more than a month on from the autopsy that confirmed the 19-year-old had died as a result of an accidental fall into a ravine, Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan has given an interview to The Sun where she addresses the claims that Jay stole the Rolex, and further theories that he had been taken on a yacht to Morocco by a drug cartel:

“He would never have been involved in anything like that.

“He had only been in Tenerife three days – and was at a festival with friends which had wristbands, security and an itinerary.

“I’ve no idea where these drug stories have come from and the stuff about him stealing a watch is nonsense.”

I guess we are just going to have to take her word for it. 56-year-old Debbie adds:

“The people saying stuff about him didn’t know Jay and they don’t know us.

“He hasn’t been here to defend himself against all these horrible stories that were going on around the world about him.”

That is true, to be fair. If Jay Slater didn’t steal the Rolex, then it’s pretty harsh that this rumour would continue to circulate weeks after his death when he can’t address or disprove it. Not that he’d be aware of the rumours of course, but still. Although his sketchy past probably doesn’t help matters when it comes to the internet potentially inventing new stories about him.

Hundreds of people gathered to attend Jay’s Funeral at Accrington Crematorium on 10 August, with Funeral Director Sarah Barton, who officiated the service, saying that ‘Jay touched the lives of so many people’.

Meanwhile, the GoFundMe cash continues to trickle in, even though the search/funeral/saga is over…

Well, what’s Debbie supposed to do, turn down free money? Keep those donations coming in!
