I haven’t been to Japan personally but I’ve seen some videos and heard some stories and it looks like getting on the train there can be absolute hell and even worse than getting on the tube in London during rush hour.
Fortunately, as you can see from these photosets, there’s also a lighter side to the Japanese train system that’s also completely weird to us Westerners.
