Whilst superhero movies are pretty much universally loved – yeah I know about your take on the genre film studies guy – you have gotta admit that after a while they can get kinda samey as each one pretty much follows the same formula every time.

That’s why it’s always great when a movie comes out with a fresh take on the idea and it looks like the latest one is arriving courtesy of Jamie Foxx, Jospeh Gordon-Levitt and Netflix and concerns a special pill that gives you super powers. There’s only one catch – you don’t know what super power you’re going to get until after you’ve taken it, so there’s quite a bit of risk involved as you could end up turning into a horrible monster like The Thing in ‘Fantastic Four’.

Anyway, you can watch the trailer for ‘Project Power’ below and the official synopsis is underneath that as well:

On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user.

The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it.

While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction.

But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.

Yeah I was kinda all for this movie but then I watched the trailer and it looked like a bad rap video and was way too long and didn’t really tell me much about what was going on in it. Just seemed like a bunch of explosions and special effects and dumb one liners about teaming up and saving the city etc.  The fact that that joke about Jamie Foxx being fine at the end was probably the best they could come up with in the whole movie doesn’t fill me with expectation either.

However, this does seem to be the trailer template for some alt superhero movie like ‘Deadpool’ though, so hopefully this one will turn out decent as well. Guess we’ll find out August 14th.

For more of the same, check out Marvel introducing non binary superheroes called Snowflake and Safespace. Not even joking here.
