Jamaican lawmakers are set to debate a landmark proposal that will legalise weed within the country and also renounce the Queen as the head of state, making the island a full blown republic.

The constitutional amendment was announced by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen on Thursday. It was described as a ‘major action item’ on the new government’s agenda and plans to replace the Queen with a Non-Executive President.
It arrives after Jamaican Labour Party leader Andrew Holness scraped a narrow win in the February elections, promising a tax cut and a higher minimum wage. The previous incumbent government had followed an austerity programme, and we all know how popular those can be. The government has also promised to set up a single anti-corruption body and reform the tax and pension system.
It all sounds too good to be true over there really and it probably is as we all know politicians make a lot of promises that they can’t keep. In the small print, they’re only legalising weed for ‘specific purposes’ – but hey, that’s better than it being completely illegal. And any of these measures would also need to be passed by Parliament before they come into law over there. Again, we all know how hard that can be.

So it seems like Holness has a lot of nice ideas. Whether or not they become reality is a different kettle of fish completely. We can but hope though.
