Way back in 2010, Jake Gyllenhaal dated Taylor Swift for about 3 months before breaking up with her. This prompted Swift to write the song ‘All Too Well’ in 2012, which her fans quickly clocked on was about Gyllenhaal breaking her heart into a million pieces.
All these years, Gyllenhaal never addressed the song or the break-up, even with Taylor Swift’s army of fans coming after him on social media and calling him a scumbag and whatnot. Fast forward to 2022 and Taylor Swift has re-released an extended version of the song, including new lyrics taking a dig at Gyllenhaal, 41, who is now dating 26-year-old model Jeanne Cadieu:
And I was never good at telling jokes/ But the punchline goes: I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age.
Come on Taylor Swift, it’s been 12 years! Get over it already! Well Gyllenhaal finally decided to speak on the situation in an interview with Esquire, and gave pretty much the perfect response when asked about the track:
It has nothing to do with me. It’s about her relationship with her fans.
It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.
On the backlash he received, and still receives, from Taylor Swift fans:
My question is: Is this our future? Is anger and divisiveness our future? Or can we be empowered and empower others while simultaneously putting empathy and civility into the dominant conversation? That’s the discussion we should be having.
At some point, I think it’s important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one’s name.
Well said, Jake Gyllenhaal. Well said, indeed! The guy retains his dignity and class in the face of a social media pile-on while Taylor Swift comes off looking like a deranged bunny boiler over a decade after he broke up with her. He even added this TKO later in the interview, which you just know Taylor Swift read the moment it dropped:
My life is wonderful. I have a relationship that is truly wonderful, and I have a family I love so much. And this whole period of time has made me realise that.
RIP Taylor Swift’s heart and RIP her supporters’ brains. Oh me? My life is great. Just loving life with my family and my new relationship. Oh that 15 minute short film about a 3-month relationship 12 years ago that my ex-girlfriend can’t get over? It’s all good, no worries. I don’t begrudge her at all. Just such a simultaneously great response/troll move that you have to respect it. The best way to deal with a break-up after all is to just move on with your life and forget all about it. Now all he has to worry about are the Swifties swarming his social media profiles again. Good luck, Jake!
