Depending on where you live right now, there might be total lockdown or complete open society. Laws against gatherings of more than 10 people, or packed stadiums filled with thousands of people. And while we argue every day about whose approach is right, there’s still no end in sight for COVID-19.

Well, over in Israel, the risk of spreading the disease is totally worth it if it means the 2021 Miss Universe Pageant goes off as planned. Despite being one of the first countries to close its borders due to concerns around the Omicron variant, Israel is still planning to host the world’s most beautiful ladies at the Miss Universe pageant at the Red Sea resort city of Eilat in December.

As per Newsweek, Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov made the announcement a day after Israel said it was banning all foreigners from entering the country from Sunday.

Razvozov told reporters that participants at the Miss Universe beauty pageant would be given waivers while possibly undergoing PCR testing every two days, as well as other precautionary measures.

This is an event that will be broadcast in 174 countries, a very important event, an event that Eilat, too, is very much in need of.

Well, I think that’s fair enough really? I mean this isn’t Miss Birmingham or Miss Chelmsford we’re talking about here (with no disrespect to those fine cities). This is Miss Universe! Can you even fathom a world where this highly prestigious event does not take a place, even for one year? Not on Israel’s watch, that’s for sure.

Now you may be thinking – if the Omicron variant is so dangerous, why allow these lovely ladies to travel? If the Omicron variant isn’t dangerous, why ban everyone else from travel? Is it because only beauty queens with perfect cheek bones and pert bums in their 20s are immune to coronavirus? Maybe the WHO has told Israel something that they haven’t told the rest of us. All I know is that it has to be well worth the risk since they’ve decided to go ahead with it. Mazel tov, everyone!
