Ollie Watkins is having a sensational season for Aston Villa. The former Brentford striker is leading Villa’s charge towards a top-four finish and looks certain to be in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for EURO 2024.
And with the 28-year-old in the prime of his career, might a move to one of England’s bigger clubs now be on the cards for the talented striker?
Best Ever Season In The Premier League
Already, Watkins is having his best-ever season in the English Premier League. And there are still another two months of the current campaign to go.
His goal-scoring exploits for Villa haven’t gone unnoticed outside of the club either, as the bookmakers have sat up and taken notice. He is just 2/7 to make Gareth Southgate’s EURO 2024 England squad. And in the betting to be player of the season, Watkins is 16/1, which puts him amongst the top 10 favourites. Finally, in the latest Premier League top goalscorer odds, Watkins is second favourite at 6/1, putting him way ahead of his English rivals, Dominic Solanke (18/1) and Jarrod Bowen (33/1).
Will The Premier League Big Boys Come Calling?
When the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are on the hunt for a big-name striker, Harry Kane is usually the only English frontman who would get linked with the Premier League giants. Apart from Kane, the big English clubs would usually cast their eyes abroad for the next international superstar rather than look at a young English striker.
🔴⚪️ Antoine Griezmann confirms he’s not leaving Atlético despite Man United links: “I’ve to earn myself to be a legend in this club. That’s my mission”.
“By 2024 I want to bring joy to the fans and some title for Atlético. It would be a dream…”, told Marca. pic.twitter.com/egaBVI6HkM

Step up, Ollie Watkins. Except for Manchester City, Watkins would now surely improve any of the other big clubs in the Premier League. He would certainly make Chelsea and Manchester United better. And even with the talented pool of strikers Liverpool has to choose from, Watkins could provide a focal point and offer the Reds a different way of playing.
His work rate is at the required level, and his attitude is spot on. There are never any negative stories about Watkins in the press. He seems the sort of guy who shuns the spotlight and just wants to focus on his game. Watkins would be perfect for one of the Premier League big boys.
Can Villa Keep Watkins Happy?
Villa fans, calm down. Yes, Aston Villa is a big club. But unless they start competing to win Premier League titles and European trophies, they might struggle to keep Ollie Watkins happy.

The club can no doubt satisfy his salary ambitions, but as Villa fans saw with Jack Grealish, if a fan favourite wants to win trophies, he may well have to move on.
The remainder of the 2023/24 season could be pivotal in how the future plays out. If Villa can qualify for the Champions League, that might be enough to convince bigger stars to join the club, and also keep Watkins in Claret and Blue. On the other hand, if the season fizzles out and Villa finish outside of the top four and fails to win the Europa Conference League, might Watkins seek pastures, new?
The remainder of the 2023/24 season promises to be an interesting few weeks for Villa and Ollie Watkins.
