A 19-year-old uni student who was too lazy to set up an OnlyFans decided to instead trick people into donating to her GoFundMe account, by pretending she had pancreatic cancer.

Iowa girl Madison Russo managed to rack up $37,000 in donations before internet detectives poked a bunch of holes in her story.

Medical equipment, bank receipts, a wig, and a vehicle are among the items seized by Eldridge police this week as part of an investigation into a cancer scam involving a Bettendorf woman, according to newly filed court documents. Court records show police on Friday obtained a warrant to search the Bettendorf apartment of Madison Marie Russo. The 19-year-old was arrested Monday on one count of first-degree theft, a Class C felony punishable by 10 years in prison. She was released from the Scott County Jail the same day after a $10,000 cash bond was posted on her behalf.

The entire time, Russo was documenting her experience on TikTok, which I guess was necessary in order to bring those sweet donations in, but also a risky game considering how suspicious people on the internet can be, even when you’re telling the truth (which she obviously wasn’t).

Russo claimed she was ‘diagnosed’ with stage 2 pancreatic cancer in 2021, and that her diagnosis had an 11% survival rate. In the following months, she claimed she was also diagnosed with leukemia after the cancer spread to her blood. Soon after that, Russo revealed that she now had a ‘football-sized’ tumor on her spine. Three different types of primary cancers?! Got a bit carried away with that one I think.

Soon enough, commenters began noticing strange discrepancies with how her chemo was being administered. ‘What is going on with that chest port?’ one user asked, also noticing that the dressing was all ‘screwed up.’ Another TikTok user pointed out that her gastrostomy tube was stuck too far up her nose.

Others found it odd that she could maintain a high GPA at uni and an internship while in treatment for that serious of a diagnosis. Not to mention that she wasn’t experiencing any physical side effects from the chemotherapy, like hair loss. Russo’s response? That she maintained her hair with the use of over-the-counter supplements and ‘just not washing it every day.’ Ohhh, right.

In the end, Russo was arrested and is now being held on a $10,000 bond for felony theft. On some level I actually feel bad the girl; we all remember what it’s like being 19 years old and desperate for a little extra cash to go clubbing and shopping and whatnot. Still, I don’t think I ever considered faking a cancer diagnosis in order to trick people into donating tens of thousands of dollars to my GoFundMe account. You simply are not getting away with that one in this day and age.
