Earlier this week, India Willoughby called the police and reported JK Rowling for misgendering her on Twitter. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Northumbria Police have now released a statement to confirm that they will not be investigating India’s complaint, because it did not “meet the criminal threshold.”
JK Rowling has actually been misgendering the sh*t out of India Willoughby on Twitter/X for years now, but apparently the final straw came when Rowling responded to a video of Willoughby with the following:
This resulted in India Willoughby revealing in an interview with Byline TV that she had contacted the police to report JK Rowling for misgendering her:
EXCLUSIVE 🚨🚨🚨@IndiaWilloughby has called the police and reported @jk_rowling for an alleged hate crime for misgendering her.
This could lead to Rowling’s arrest. pic.twitter.com/iJMDmDeMaO

As we’ve now established, nothing will come of India Willoughby’s attempt to have JK Rowling arrested, with a Northumbria Police spokesperson giving the following statement to the PA News agency today:
“On Monday, March 4, we received a complaint about a post on social media. While we recognise the upset this may have caused, the post was reviewed and did not meet the criminal threshold. The complainant has been updated of this.”
A victory for common sense, some might say, whereas others will claim it’s another example of society failing trans people by not punishing those who refuse to address them by their preferred pronouns. The question is – will JK Rowling misgendering India Willoughby meet the criminal threshold at some point in the future? In 10 years time, would police have turned up at JK Rowling’s door? It will be interesting to see what happens as governments change in the coming years and beyond.
