Absolute scenes in a hospital over in Jilin, China, this week, after a man turned up to A&E with his girlfriend’s hand stuck in his mouth, causing him to drool helplessly as he struggled to breathe.
Apparently the couple were trying to film a funny video to post online, in which they’d see if the girl’s hand was small enough to fit into her boyfriend’s mouth. Turns out it absolutely was small enough to fit in his mouth, but when she tried to pull it out, the muscles around his mouth and jaw stiffened and the hand became stuck. Cue panic and an immediate dash to the hospital, where loads of people starting filming and taking pictures of them:
What a nightmare. Apparently things got even worse as the anxiety set in and the man’s teeth began clamping down on his girlfriend’s hand as his muscles contracted. This in addition to her hand being drenched in his saliva as he continued to drool and gurgle involuntarily.
The girlfriend said:
“Saliva ran down my wrist to my elbow. It felt like my hand was stuck in a meat grinder.”
Gross.
Dr. Zhang Mingyuan, who handled the case, explained that the muscle contractions in the boyfriend’s jaw were preventing him from opening his mouth. Worse still, the more he panicked, the tighter his jaw clenched. In the end, hospital staff had to stick on a soothing playlist to calm the man down, and then used a special mouth opener to expand his jaw enough to inject a muscle relaxant in the specific area.
Eventually, Dr. Zhang was able to rotate the girlfriend’s wrist and slowly but surely remove it from her boyfriend’s mouth. He is now presenting the case as a cautionary tale, warning people that forcing a person’s jaw open can cause nerve damage or the dislocation of the jaw. Not to mention total humiliation in the form of photos and videos that will live on the internet until the end of time. You live and you learn.
