Despite being one of the most highly-rated TV shows out there at the moment, Netflix’s Adolescence has come under fire from some sections of the internet for casting a white boy as the knife killer, claiming this is not representative of modern-day Britain and that it’s an attempt to villainise white people in the minds of the masses.

Naturally, Elon Musk appears to be in full agreement with this theory, and is now facing backlash for amplifying this idea by replying ‘Wow’ to the following:

Elon Musk blasted for spreading 'concerning' misinformation about Netflix's Adolescence

‘Netflix has a show called Adolescence that’s about a British knife killer who stabbed a girl to death on a bus and it’s based on real life cases such as the Southport murderer.

‘So guess what. They race swapped the actual killer from a black man/migrant to a white boy and the story has it so he was radicalized online by the red pill movement.

‘Just the absolute state of anti-white propaganda.’

Just one issue with that theory; Adolescence was already in production and being filmed when Southport happened, and so it’s impossible that it was based on that event in particular. The Southport tragedy occurred on July 29 last year, and Adolescence was filmed over six months between March and September.

Essentially, Adolescence isn’t even about knife crime, but rather the radicalisation of insecure young boys through online influences and societal pressures. For someone to watch Adolescence and feel irate that a white actor has been cast as the knife killer, their brain must be absolutely mangled by the culture wars and identity politics. You’ve completely missed the point of the show!

For what it’s worth, Stephen Graham, who co-wrote the show with Jack Thorne, previously explained how he drew inspiration from multiple knife-related crimes for the story:

‘Where it came from, for me, is there was an incident in Liverpool, a young girl, and she was stabbed to death by a young boy. I just thought, “Why?”

‘Then there was another young girl in south London who was stabbed to death at a bus stop. And there was this thing up North, where that young girl, Brianna Ghey, was lured into the park by two teenagers, and they stabbed her.

‘I just thought, “What’s going on? What is this that’s happening?”‘

Graham wanted the show to ‘shine a spotlight’ on the behaviour of these boys and what had radicalised them:

‘One of our aims was to ask, “What is happening to our young men these days and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?”,’ Graham continued. ‘And the pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over.’

‘When these things are on the news, your judgement instantly goes to blaming the family, you blame the mum and dad.

‘We’re all guilty of it, because that’s the easy common denominator. I just thought, “What if that’s not the case at all?”‘

Reckon Elon Musk even watched Adolescence? Doubt it.

Now, if someone wanted to make a miniseries about an immigrant who moves to the UK, is radicalised and goes on a killing spree for whatever reason, then that’s a whole different show altogether. Maybe Elon Musk wants to fund it?
