Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has been sentenced to five years for attempted murder after shooting at a man who allegedly molested his 4-year-old son at a daycare centre in 2022.
45-year-old Harry Eugene Goularte had been arrested at the nursery on charges of lewd acts with a child, but was let out on bail. The victim reported the abuse which allegedly occurred in the nursery’s bathroom, where Goularte insists he was just helping the child ‘put their pants on correctly’.
Well, Velasquez tracked down Goularte and shot at him multiple times during a high-speed chase while he was in a car with his dad. Unfortunately Velasquez managed to hit Goularte’s father instead, who suffered ‘non-life threatening injuries’.
This week, Velasquez was sentenced to five years in prison in a Santa Clara, California, courtroom, though he has served three years already so will be out in two.
Meanwhile, Goularte faces one charge of lewd acts with a minor and is set for trial on June 2nd.
Velasquez was able to reach a deal with prosecutors to avoid a life sentence after several delays to the trial. He had acknowledged that ‘what I did was very dangerous to other people’, and added that he has forgiven the Goularte family:
‘Even with that family and what they’ve done, I can’t have hate like that for them. Because there are things that I have to move on to and give love to my kids and give love to the people around.’
Apparently the Goularte family don’t feel the same way though, because they asked for a longer sentence for Velasquez than what he was given.
It does look like the courts took the details of the incident into consideration, given that Velasquez was gunning for the person who allegedly molested his son. Obviously you can’t go around murdering alleged paedophiles or even proven paedophiles, and certainly not during a car chase in public, but I think any person can relate to the urge to hurt a person who has touched a young family member.
It’s just really unfortunate that he accidentally wounded the accused’s father instead of his intended target. Otherwise, who knows? Any jail term may have been worth it, in his view.
Still, 5 years (out in two) is not so bad, considering he shot the wrong person on a public road. Here’s hoping Harry Eugene Goularte gets what he deserves when he has his day in court too. Something tells me he’ll have a much harder time of it in prison than Cain Velasquez will.
