Anyone who’s watched Adolescence on Netflix will have no doubts that 15-year-old Owen Cooper is destined for big things in the movie world. Sure enough, the Warrington lad has already landed his second ever acting role, and it’s going to be a major Hollywood production.
Incredibly, before Adolescence, Owen Cooper had never acted in a professional capacity before. He sent a self tape in to the show when they did a callout, and the rest is history. Cooper told Variety:
“I only really wanted to start acting a couple of years ago. It’s not been long. I grew up wanting to be a footballer. I don’t know what it was that made me want to do it, but I just wanted to do it.
“And then I went to lessons and enjoyed it. And then I got into a little agency thing, and then I got a self-tape request for Adolescence. And everything came from that, really.”
While working on Adolescence, Stephen Graham hooked Owen up with his agent, and it wasn’t long before he got booked into his next gig: a remake of Wuthering Heights, which itself is based on the classic novel by Emily Brontë.
The movie will be directed by Emerald Fennell (Saltburn, Promising Young Woman), and will star Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, playing lovers Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. Owen Cooper will play the younger version of Jacob Elordi i.e. young Heathcliff.
Imagine that – your first professional acting job is alongside Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters on one the best TV shows to come out of the UK in years, and then you follow that up with a major Hollywood movie starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. In fact, Owen has already provided some feedback from the set of Wuthering Heights:
“Jacob’s lovely. He’s always chatting to everyone. And same as Margot. Margot is lovely as well.”
Rubbing shoulders with the stars eh? 15 years old! At this rate, Owen Cooper could very well go on to become one of the biggest names in Hollywood for the next generation. Not bad for a kid from Warrington who only realised he wanted to be an actor a couple years ago.
