He heard a bang on the door and Libyan troops asked him if he was American or Libyan, he showed his passport and they moved on. He heard shuffling and banging outside his appartment, he waited for it to die down and then went out to the corridor. The guy who lived opposite him was lying unconscious in a pool of blood. Alex had been helping his 16 year old daughter with her English homework, now he was worried for her safety too. He heared strange noises from the corridor so shuffled round the corner. He found the Libyan soldier raping the young girl. His first thought was obviously to grab the guard’s discarded AK47, but before he had a chance the other soldier stepped out from the shadows with his gun pointed straight at him.
Alex expected to get blown away but the guard just shoed him back to the other room whilst Alex called him all the bad names he could think of. There was nothing he could do.
Later he heard a young child crying with hunger from the next flat. Libyans tend to buy their food fresh so don’t have much to eat in their homes. Alex took round some bread and cheese thinking this would all blow over in 2 or 3 days.
There were sirens, gunshots and screaming 24/7. He was basically in the centre of a war zone. Alex kept himself ready to leave at a moments notice, never going to bed, just taking strategic naps.
