A trauma surgeon, crash investigation expert and artist working with the Transport Accident Commission over in Australia have developed an interactive sculpture designed to show what humans would look like if we evolved to the point where we could withstand car crashes.

‘Graham’ has no neck, meaning he can’t break it; a flat, chubby face to protect his nose and ears, airbags in between each rib, and thicker and tougher skin. His knees also bend in all directions. This is basically what we would look like if evolution designed us to survive car crashes.
The Commission says:
Cars have evolved a lot faster than humans, and Graham helps us understand why we need to improve every aspect of our roads system to protect ourselves from our own mistakes.
Graham is on show at the State Library of Victory until August 8th.

Well, I guess the benefits of not evolving to survive car crashes is that we don’t look anything like Graham here. Don’t know about you but I’d much rather be paralysed in a car crash than have to look like that. Although if we all looked like that sculpture then maybe Graham is the Leo DiCaprio of this alternate universe? Who knows. Difficult to say.
Regardless, the point they’re making is that the human body is massively underequipped to deal with car crashes so we need to focus on road safety instead. Didn’t realise they had to give us all nightmares to drive that point home.
