Harry Kane may have backed out of wearing the OneLove armband after he was threatened with a yellow card by FIFA last Saturday, but he’s since been seen rocking a crazy £500,000 rainbow Rolex around Qatar.
Now I don’t know that the best way to protest inequality is by wearing a Rolex that costs half a million quid, but you have to remember this is a multi-millionaire superstar footballer we’re dealing with. It’s the millionaire version of changing your Facebook profile pic to have an LGBT rainbow over it – you just get an LGBT rainbow Rolex instead.
Let’s be honest – Kane and the rest of the England squad were put to shame by Iran and then Germany (but especially Iran) when it comes to taking a stand. So at least he’s made some effort to make some kind of statement, even if it’s as subtle as wearing a £500,000 Rolex and hoping the press would notice.
Interestingly, FIFA announced earlier today that they are reversing the ban on rainblow flags, hats and attire being worn by fans in stadiums around Qatar. I don’t think this extends to footballers being allowed to wear OneLove armbands though, but we’ll have to wait and see whether Kane and his teammates make some kind of statement later tonight before they take on the USA.
Insane Luxury Life, an Instagram account with over 700,000 followers, posted more details about Kane’s new watch:
The captain of England @harrykane wears a rare @rolex Daytona ‘Rainbow’ 116595RBOW in 18k rose gold, one of the most sought after pieces on market. This masterpiece is set with 36 baguette-cut rainbow sapphires on bezel, 56 brilliant-cut diamonds on the case and 11 baguette-cut rainbow colored sapphires as hour markers. The Daytona Rainbow was first released in 2012 in 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold, at the time they weren’t much appreciated by the market. #Rolex
