The first ever slum was supposedly in New York, in an area around lake Connect called Five Points. The lake was surrounded by tanneries and slaughterhouses and the waste products from both industries were poured into the waters.
The people who worked in these industries set up homes and continued to contaminate the lake with their own waste and rubbish. Over time the lake got filled and dried up and Five Points was built on the site where the lake once stood.
