This time next month, we’ll have seen the GTA 6 trailer and have a better idea of what the game is all about, but one thing that looks fairly probable is that the game’s two protagonists, Jason & Lucia, were inspired by 2013’s ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’.
After all, they are both Bonnie & Clyde couples, a white guy and a Latina, and Ryan Gosling’s character in the movie rides a Sanchez motorbike like the one seen in the GTA 6 leaks. Lucia is also rumoured to have a young child in GTA 6, just like Eva Mendes’s character in The Place Beyond The Pines (named Jason, funnily enough).
It wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar designed their protagonists based on characters in a movie: Vice City’s Tommy was based on Tony Montana, the Grove Street Boys in San Andreas were based on Boyz N The Hood, Niko Bellic from GTA IV was based on Vladimir Mashkov’s character from Behind Enemy Lines, and GTA V’s Michael was based on Robert De Niro’s character in Heat.
So yeah, sounds like it all adds up, and probably won’t be the only movie that GTA 6 pulls ideas from or indeed satirises. Both Jason & Lucia will be playable characters in the game, with players able to seamlessly switch between one and the other just like in GTA V. There’s also rumours of a prison break scene early in the game, where one breaks the other out before they both go on the run.
The trailer lands in a few weeks and the game itself is set to follow in December 2024 (probably). We’ve also got a look at the potential GTA VI loading screen girl. Is she in with a shot?
