The debate over ‘gender-affirming care’ is a complicated one, especially when it comes to children. Over in Arkansas at the moment they’re discussing Senate Bill 199 – which would allow doctors to be sued for malpractice for performing gender-affirming care on minors for up to 30 years after the patient turns 18.
Somehow in this very serious and important discussion, the question of whether transgender pharmacist Gwendolyn Herzig has a penis came up:
Here’s a longer clip that provides more context around the moment:
You all deserve to hear her full answer to this question.
Republicans questioned a transgender doctor in Arkansas about gender affirming care.
One didn’t like her answer and repeated his question.
Then he asked her, upset,
“Do you have a penis?”

The question remains unanswered, but if Herzig really wanted to go viral she should have quipped back ‘Do you?’ Imagine the roars of laughter and knee-slapping that would ensue as Senator Mat Mackee sat there red-faced. A missed opportunity for sure, but I guess she did handle it quite well otherwise.
Herzig told Business Insider that she felt “shock” and “disgust” when McKee asked about her penis (or lack thereof):
‘I kind of just like froze because I was just trying to process what just happened. I’m like, ‘How do I even respond to that?
It didn’t matter my professional stance or who I am as a person, to be just kind of downgraded to my genitals was pretty horrifying.’
