A Goalkeeper In Paraguay Got A Red Card BEFORE A Cup Final Match Even Kicked Off

Well that’s not a great start to a cup final, is it? Goalkeeper Jean Fernandes gets himself sent off before the ref even blows his whistle because he made cut-throat gestures towards rival fans behind the goal. They even took it to VAR, which, in fairness to Fernandes, showed the fans lobbing things at his goal. Maybe the right thing to do in that situation is to ignore the fans (especially in South America), but to receive a red card over it? Very unfair!

Worse still, his side Cerro Porteno ended up losing the Paraguay Super Cup final 3-1 to arch rivals Olimpia, who no doubt took full advantage of playing the whole 90 against 10 men and with a less-skilled keeper in goal. Fernandes, who is on loan at Cerro Porteno from Sao Paulo FC, protested the decision by claiming his expulsion was the result of a ‘misunderstanding’ and he had performed a Brazilian funk music gesture called a ‘vape’ which in his homeland is used by footballers as a celebration. Probably a load of BS but still, you have to feel bad for the guy.
