Giardia
Giardia are parasites that get into the intestines of animals through their big fat gobs. They normally get in because of some carelessly discarded poo poo. Symptoms include violent diarrhea, excessive burping and farting, stomach cramps, upset stomach, and puking. If treated you’ll be OK though.
HIV
This one doesn’t need any introduction really does it? The HIV/AIDS pandemic killed about 1.8 million people in 2010 and around 5% of the adult population of Sub-Saharan Africa are infected. HIV is no joke at all.
Malaria (Plasmodium falciparum)
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium falciparum being jazzed into your blood pipes by female mosquitoes. It’s another monster of the microbial world. The smooth model shows the parasite just after it has entered a red blood cell. The spiky malaria shows the Plasmodium before. In 2010 around 200 million people caught the curse and 1 million of those died. Many of the lucky survivors have got a lifetime of relapses to look forward to. There is still no known vaccine that’s any good.
