The World Cup has been done and dusted for some weeks now but FIFA President Gianni Infantino is still making a fool out of himself, this time by taking selfies in front of Pele’s coffin at the Brazilian football legend’s wake.
Infantino had famously come under fire in the weeks leading up to the World Cup by claiming he could sympathise with mistreated migrant workers in Qatar because like minorities, gay people and the disabled, he was also oppressed because he grew up with red hair.
His skin was basically saved by the fact the World Cup itself was a roaring success with one of the greatest finals ever in Brazil Vs France, and so all the controversies surrounding the event were swept under the carpet as the world turned its focus on non-football related matters for the next four years.
Even still, he managed to make a tit out of himself at Pele’s wake by agreeing to take selfies with anyone and everyone who asked. So what if Pele’s cold, dead corpse lay in the background just a foot away? It would be rude to turn down a selfie!
Personally, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal but it’s still such a Gianni Infantino move to not predict the backlash that followed. Doesn’t he know this is exactly the type of thing that the internet goes into outrage mode over? Probably too busy counting his millions to notice, to be fair.
Meanwhile, FIFA have addressed Salt Bae’s behaviour at the World Cup. Somehow I don’t think we’ll be seeing him at the next one.
