Geronimo continued to fight, escaping from the Mexican’s grasp many times over and getting a bit of a reputation for disappearing into caves. As he grew old, he led a group of 38 men, women and children and managed to evade thousands of American and Mexican troops for a year, getting him the pretty cool nick name of “worst Indian who ever lived”. It seems to me like he was one of the best personally. At one stage there were a few thousand American troops trying to track him down. This band of 38 was the last major force of independent native American warriors who would not accept US occupation.
In 1886, when Geronimo was in his late 50s, Captain Henry Lawton and 1st Lietenant Charles Gatewood were sent on a mission to finally bring the rogue in. They chased down Geronimo and his troop, constantly attacking and chasing, never giving them a second to rest and recoup. Eventually they surrendered at Skeleton Canyon in Arizona.
