From the late 17th Century onward, Apache attacks on the Mexicans were regular and bloody. From 1820 to 1835 alone there were at least 5000 Mexicans killed and 100 of their settlements ransacked.

In 1873, in what became known as the Massacre of Casa Grande, the Mexicans once again attacked the Apaches. This time there was months of fighting in the mountains where neither gained significant ground.  The two sides decided to make a peace treaty and to celebrate, the Mexicans cracked open their ritual mescal.

Whilst the Apache were all off their teeth and coming up hard on the hallucinogen, the Mexicans killed or captured all of them. Imagine that, off your nut and then getting slaughtered. That sounds horrible. It’s bad enough just doing a trip down the shops for some crisps in that state, let alone getting a stabbing.
