We’ve all experienced that hangover when we feel like absolute death and you’ll be pleased to hear that a German court has now decided that hangovers are actually an illness, so at least someone is on your side on this one.

The unusual ruling came courtesy of a court in Frankfurt after an unnamed firm was accused of making illegal health claims about anti hangover drinks and tablets. The company was claiming that their products could cure ‘temporary disruptions’ to the body caused by a hangover such as nausea or tiredness, but the court ruled that these ‘temporary disruptions’ were essentially illnesses and as such this company couldn’t claim that their products sorted them out. Get it?
The ruling also said the following:

Drinks which are not pharmaceutical cannot be advertised as preventing, treating or healing a human illness.
Information about a food product cannot ascribe any properties for preventing, treating or healing a human illness or give the impression of such a property.
By an illness, one should understand even small or temporary disruptions to the normal state or normal activity of the body.
Yeah, I’m not sure if this is the kind of story I wanted either when I clicked on the headline, because I doubt it’s going to go down too well when you tell your boss that you’re ill when you actually have a hangover. It’s not gonna be that easy, sorry, but I suppose if you get creative maybe it might be able to work. Or maybe you can take it as a sign of things to come in the future? Either way, it’s different. Probably lost in translation to be fair.
