French film legend Gerard Depardieu has come up with an ultimate, bulletproof defence as to why he can’t be guilty of the sex assault claims aganst him: he’s ‘too old and fat’. Which you would think is actually an argument against him, but let’s read on and allow the man to explain.

Depardieu, 76, is accused of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of The Green Shutters in 2021. He addressed the Paris court this week, asserting:

“I’m not going to have fun at 76, or at 130 kilos [20.4 stone]. I’m unhappy enough. I’m not going to touch anyone’s butt, not on a set or anywhere else.”

“After what I’ve read about myself over the past three years, there’s no need to interpret.

“People say I’m a real creep.”

He conceded that at one point during filming, he may have held onto one of his accusers’ hips, but only to maintain his balance because he thought he was about to fall over. Is this guy the king of excuses or what?

When confronted with an allegation from a witness who said she saw him trapping the 54-year-old set designer between his legs, Depardieu refuted:

“I would never put anything between my thighs.

“With the belly I have, I can’t put anything between my thighs.”

The set designer, however, described the encounter with Depardieu as being caught in a “wolf trap”, claiming security on set had to intervene to stop his physical advances and verbal abuse towards her.

Depardieu claimed he had apologised for his language towards her, which he conceded was often crude and inappropriate:

“There’s rudeness and vulgarity. I say the word p***y, for fun. I sometimes say it to myself.”

As for the other accuser, an assistant producer on the film, she recounted being molested three times by Depardieu, who allegedly grabbed her buttocks and breasts.

Depardieu both denied the allegation and expressed remorse over the situation, stating:

“I don’t see why I’d want to grope a woman.

“I’m not someone who rubs himself against others on the subway.

“I push people around, I provoke. It’s rude to provoke, but I don’t want to make anyone cry.

“I haven’t worked for three years. I think the whole affair is being exploited by the media.”

Depardieu also implied that he felt persecuted by the #MeToo movement, saying:

“Feminist movements have become a terror.”

I honestly can’t believe that he didn’t also argue that he’s incapable of getting an erection, not that you’d necessarily need to be able to in order to sexually assault or harass someone. After all, all the accusations are that he was grabby/touchy/feely/trappy, not penetraty/attempty.

Even still, it’s not like the rest of his arguments are going to do him much good. Harvey Weinstein has already proven that being old and fat does not make you incapable or unwilling to commit a sex crime.

Should the Paris court find him guilty, Depardieu could face a sentence of up to five years in jail and a fine of €75,000 (£62,000). Aside from that, Depardieu is slated for another trial concerning allegations of raping an actress, and also for tax evasion and money laundering. Imagine getting yourself into this much drama at 76 years of age! Not a good time to be Gerard Depardieu, that’s for sure.
