A few more details are trickling in on the death of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, and their pet dog at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico late yesterday.
According to the search warrant, Hackman, his wife and dog had been dead for some time and were found in different rooms when police turned up at the property.
While that does sound a tad dodgy, County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed earlier that they do not suspect foul play, but also haven’t disclosed a cause of death.
Gene Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, told TMZ that she suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, which is just about the only explanation that makes sense if there was no foul play involved.
Sure enough, a gas company has said it is also assisting in the investigation into the deaths, according to Sky News.
In the meantime, tributes to Gene Hackman are pouring in around the world, including from Prince William:
So sad to hear the news of the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy. Hackman was a true genius of film who brought each and every character to life with power, authenticity and star quality. W https://t.co/qcqmMsHs1f

They just don’t make actors like this anymore, do they? Someone that actually seems like a real person and isn’t full of steroids or botox or hair dye, but a real man’s man. The guy just had such a strong and compelling presence on screen, and it’s no wonder he managed to win two Oscars, two BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Silver Bear throughout his 60-year (!) career. Unbelievable.
RIP to a true legend of the game, and to his wife Betsy and their dog too.
