Here’s a bit of unexpected transfer news this summer – the BBC have announced that Gary Neville has officially signed up to be a Dragon for Season 21 of Dragon’s Den in 2024.
As much as he’d like to, Neville won’t be buying players for Manchester United, but rather joining Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden and co in deciding whether to invest in a range of different businesses from wannabe entrepreneurs.
The ex-Manchester United and England right-back has a business portfolio that spans property, hospitality, education, media and sport, so you’d think he has the mind for this sort of thing. Then again, he played for one of the greatest Manchester United teams ever under one of the greatest football managers ever, and his own managerial career was a total flop, so who knows?
Gary Neville’s net worth is around £20 million, which is a hell of a lot of money for sure but not exactly Dragon money, as his co-stars are worth a lot more than that. Peter Jones is worth £1BN, Touker Suleyman is worth £200m, and Deborah Meaden is worth £40m.
Still, it will be interesting to see how Neville fares on the program and whether he brings his punditry catchphrases to the show – “to be fair”, “in this moment in time”, and of course “ooooohhhhh” when a contestant’s demonstration of their product fails in front of everyone. Can hardly wait…
