Following on from the success of Stranger Things last year, it was inevitable that we were going to end up seeing a whole bunch of similar movies/TV shows this year.

Game Of Death is one such of these movies. Although it’s not actually set in the 80s like Stranger Things, it definitely feels like it’s a homage due to its kooky 80s storyline. As if taking the classic 80s concept of a bunch of young, dumb and full of come teenagers heading to a beach house for the weekend wasn’t enough, the gang also stumble across a deadly board game, which is straight out of the 80s box of cliched plot ideas.
This actually looks like it’s pretty horrific though compared to some of the hokey stuff you might have seen in the past – once they start playing the game, they realise that they have to kill 24 people until the game is satisfied, and if they don’t then one of their heads randomly explodes every few minutes. Uh oh – the game is on:
Oof. Doesn’t look like too many of them are going to get out of that alive does it? And there’s definitely going to be a bunch of sex in it too which ticks off another critical ingredient in 80s horror movies – perfect. The animated parts looked pretty cool too and make it stand out from similar genre movies.
Unfortunately I got no idea when it’s actually coming out as it’s only just premiering at SXSW this week and doesn’t seem to have any kind of distribution, so it might be a while. Maybe check it out at a film festival near you some time.
In the meantime, why not go and see Get Out? It’s dropping this week and is being called one of the best horror movies in recent memory. Even got 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.
