Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland is one of the biggest assholes of the last few years, so it’s kinda surprising to me that he’s been released from jail so quickly after being thrown in there on multiple fraud counts.

He was sentenced to six years in prison back in 2018 after defrauding investors out of $27 million, but was released over the weekend and decided to throw a welcome back party at a cocktail lounge in New York City. McFarland also had a big interview in the New York Times where he announced that he was planning on pursuing a career in technology and had dropped his plans to write a memoir.

Here’s what he had to say:

If I worked in finance, I think it would be harder to get back. Tech is more open.

And the way I failed is totally wrong, but in a certain sense, failure is OK in entrepreneurship.

I deserved my sentence. I let a lot of people down.

I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

I lied, think I was scared.

And the fear was letting down people who believed in me — showing them they weren’t right.

Sounds like he’s got it all figured out there doesn’t he? I suppose his excuse is relatable but it certainly doesn’t excuse how he behaved.

I always find it so crazy how people like McFarland can do stuff like lose people $27 million, go to jail for it, then come out and still have the confidence to try and work on something again? And even more so how people will actually want to work with him? Surely you can’t give this crook another chance? Go work in McDonald’s or something FFS.

The New York Times interview also revealed that his parents were paying his rent now that he’s out of jail. Says it all really.

For more of the same, check out this report saying that Billy McFarland was a major twat whilst on the inside. Not surprising really is it?
