As a full-time lover of music, with it taking up most of my work-time as well as leisure-time, I like to spend most of my days scouring the internet for fresh talent. Most of the time I just keep it to myself for fear that the talent I have uncovered will sell-out – which, by the way, happens all the time and leaves me thinking I’m too cool to listen to them anymore. But as Sick Chirpse provides me with the platform to promote up-and-coming artists, I thought it only fair to share my discoveries with the world .
First up is the talents of the singing violinist Marques Toliver who offers something completely fresh to the drab music scene that churns out the same music year after year! I first discovered him on Jools Holland (where I also discovered Ray Lamontagne and Sea Sick Steve) and instantly began googling him to listen to more! On researching him further, I found out that he was plucked from obscurity by Tv On The Radio’s Kyp Malone when he saw him busking on the streets of New York. He then moved to London where he was signed by Bella Union, and went on to release his debut EP in April, Butterflies Are Not Free. He is reminiscent of a young Marvyn Gaye (don’t you know we have a remix of one of his song’s by Jayou) but with a completely unique take on the soul singer, with his violin accompaniment.
