Three years on from the near-fatal Top Gear crash that saw Freddie Flintoff left with life-changing injuries to his face and ribs, the incident has been shown for the first time in a trailer for the cricket legend’s new documentary.
Flintoff opens up in detail about the crash in a new Disney+ documentary titled Flintoff, where we get a first-time glimpse at the incident:
Flintoff says: “I remember everything about it… it’s so vivid.”
In the trailer, he also speaks about his frustration with the attention surrounding his crash, showing clips of paparazzi trying to get footage of his face following his injuries.
He says: “I’ve lived under the radar for seven months, one of the real frustrations was the speculation, that’s why I’m doing this now, (about) what actually happened.”
The crash took place while Top Gear was being filmed at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey in December 2022. Flintoff was driving a three-wheel Morgan Super 3 whilst not wearing a helmet, when the vehicle flipped and slid along the track, necessitating an airlift to hospital.
The severity of the incident led the BBC to suspend Top Gear indefinitely, and Flintoff was given a £9 million settlement.
Fellow host Chris Harris spoke to Joe Rogan about the incident in 2024, explaining: “He wasn’t wearing a crash helmet. And if you do that, even at 25, 30 miles an hour, the injuries that you sustain are profound. I was there on the day, I was the only presenter with Fred that day.”
“I remember the radio message that I heard… I heard someone say this has been a real accident here. The car’s upside down.
“So I ran to the window, looked out and he wasn’t moving. So I thought he was dead. I assumed he was, then he moved.”
No helmet is obviously never a good idea, but it’s still pretty wild that Flintoff broke his ribs and mangled his face so badly when he was reportedly doing just 22MPH. Still, he knows to wear a helmet when he’s playing cricket, but didn’t put one on to drive a 3-wheeler on Top Gear? All things considered, he’s lucky it didn’t turn out worse. Good to see Flintoff back on the mend in any case.
