I don’t think I’ve ever been shy about saying that ‘The Wonder Years’ is my favourite TV show of all time – there’s just something about watching Kevin Arnold looking back on his dorky adventures when he was growing up and being a major asshole to everyone he’s ever met that pretty much all of us can relate to – so I was pretty apprehensive about the news that the series was going to be rebooted.

Thankfully, it’s not going to be a soft continuation of the show with Kevin Arnold’s son growing up in the 90s that will make everyone who loved the original show feel really really old, but instead it’s going to be taking a look at a kid growing up in the 1960s through a different lens: that of a coloured family. Obviously that’s going to be a very different show – I don’t think I can really remember any black characters turning up in the original run of the show but I could be wrong – but it looks like it’s still going to have the same sense of heart and nostalgia that made the first one such a hit.
Don Cheadle is narrating the first series and the first trailer just dropped yesterday:

OK I didn’t think that the first half of that trailer looked that good – kinda goofy and dumb to be honest – but then when that theme song kicked in and they started showing the montage I’ll admit that I did get all the feels. I immediately thought about all the great times I watched the old show and all the potential that this one had for a whole new generation and how it would hopefully help race relations over in the US on some small level after everything that’s happened over the past year or so. High expectations for this one.
For more of the same, check out when the cast of the original series got together for a reunion for a few years back. Very cute.
