I don’t think the world was particularly clamoring for an English-language version of Squid Game, but according to Deadline it’s officially in the works with Fight Club director David Fincher at the helm.
Series two of the original Korean-language Squid Game is still a couple months’ away from release, and we already know that the spin-off series ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ has been renewed for a second season, but I guess Netflix has no time to waste when it comes to milking their cash cow.
Which is great news for people who refuse to read subtitles (or listen with English dubs), and I suppose for the rest of us too, given that David Fincher is a quality director.
Aside from Fight Club, Fincher has worked on House of Cards, Mindhunter, and the Emmy Award-winning animated series Love, Death and Robots. So we’re in more than capable hands with the director/producer now working on an English-language version of Squid Game.
Who knows – maybe it will be part of a larger, extended universe and not merely an adaptation of the original. Is that too much to ask? Coming up with an original spin on the IP rather than doing the same thing all over again? If anyone can manage it, it’s Fincher. But I guess Netflix will have a say in that too.
Squid Game was a massive breakout hit in 2021 and is still ranked as Netflix’s most popular series.
P.S. Did you know that the old man from Squid Game (Oh Yeong-su) got #MeToo’d a couple years back? Read about that HERE.
