It was a nice idea back in 1776. Now though, oftentimes it means that legislation takes an absolute age to get through and it’s very hard to actually achieve anything meaningful in the system as politicians always have their own agendas to heart and very rarely agree on anything, and most of the time go out of their ways to mess each other up. So a new piece of legislation could pass the Senate, then be blocked by the Republicans, or vice versa. It led to ObamaCare facing (and overcoming) several challenges, including a Presidential election and a Supreme Court challenge. Sometimes – like yesterday – it can even lead to the shutdown of the entire government.
Basically, the Republicans and the Tea Party hated ObamaCare so much that they simply refused to pass a routine continuing resolution (CR) that would essentially fund the government’s normal operation for the next year through the House Of Representatives unless ObamaCare was cut and not funded. The Senate leader Larry Reid rejected all attempts by the Republicans to touch or change the law, and Obama himself even threatened a Presidential veto which would overrule any changes made to the ObamaCare bill when confronted with this threat.

Essentially Obama was telling the Republicans that there was no way they could win this one and get the bill thrown out, delayed or changed, which they really should have realised already considering every other challenge against it has failed. Despite this, members of the Republican party still refused to pass the CR which they knew would lead to the government shutting down as they would no longer have the funding for their normal operations. Obviously, a shutdown isn’t going to be good for anyone, but despite this these stupid hardliners still refused to pass it, pretty much just out of spite as it isn’t really going to achieve anything except for messing up the country for a few days.
The fact that is the complete dumbest about all this though is that it’s mainly only the extreme right Republicans in the Tea Party that prevented the CR from passing and that most Republicans recognise that this is a stupid tactic and that it won’t achieve anything. This is because the Republicans will eventually have to fold to the nationwide pressure when government activities like trash collection and NASA (er?) are shut down – not to mention the protests from the 800,000 federal employees who aren’t working because of the shutdown – and will be forced to pass some kind of CR bill that will include a provision for ObamaCare.
