We started talking about the suddenly troubled production schedule of ‘Fast X’ yesterday after it was revealed that director Justin Lin quit – foregoing himself somewhere in the regions of $10-20 million – due to Vin Diesel showing up late, being out of shape and not knowing his lines, but now it’s turned out that the problems run even deeper than that.

Not only is the budget for the movie already incredibly huge – somewhere around $300 million BEFORE any marketing costs – but it’s now costing Universal $1 million a day to keep the cast and crew on standby whilst they hurriedly look for a new director. Like I said yesterday, just let Vin Diesel direct it, it seems like the obvious choice right? Family!
Anyway, for a more detailed description of why it’s costing so much to shoot such a dumb movie, here’s an extract from ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ article on the problem:

Sources tell THR that Fast 10′s budget was hitting upwards of the $300 million mark, and that is without any marketing and publicity spend.
Over a hundred million of that is for above-the-line costs, which have ballooned over the years and see the studio juggling high seven- and eight-figure salaries for actors such as Charlize Theron, whose part has only grown, latest newcomers Jason Momoa and Brie Larson, and veterans Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson.
All those figures pale in comparison to the fees coming Diesel’s way.
Vin Diesel hey, the life AND the death of ‘The Fast And Furious’ franchise. It’s probably a good thing that this is going to be the last one considering how fraught things to be getting between everyone involved and the studio.
Hopefully they’ll be able to give everyone the send off they deserve, although I gotta be honest I’m not that bothered because I’ve only ever seen ‘Tokyo Drift’. Appreciate there’s a lot of family out there though.
For more of the same, check out the dumb comments Vin Diesel made about The Rock a few years ago. Very silly.
