It’s never a good idea to rile up the Swifties, but Dua Lipa may have done just that following some comments she made in a new interview which Taylor Swift fans are convinced was a thinly-veiled dig at their hero.
In the interview, Dua Lipa says “she doesn’t write songs to put people on blast”, and doesn’t need to air her dirty laundry in her music like other artists. Who could she be talking about, I wonder?
Yah I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this was a thinly veiled, albeit harmless, shot at Taylor Swift. pic.twitter.com/JSqDKTCYBv

“It’s just something that I naturally hold back. Some people are just so ruthless with their own private life, that they decide to put it all out in a song because they know that it is going to attract people’s attention. And me, it was always important for me to make music that people really loved. Not because I was putting somebody out on blast. Not because I’m doing it for the clickbait, at somebody else’s expense.”
Ruthless with their personal lives? Doing it all for attention? Making music at other people’s expense? In fairness, you could apply that to a lot of pop stars out there right now, but Taylor Swift is categorically the Queen of writing music about her ex-boyfriends and leaving no doubt as to which one in particular each song is about. After all, there’s been a lot of them! Here’s a random image I found of them lined up in order of height:
Oversharing details about her love life and being very literal with her Easter Eggs is basically Taylor Swift’s brand, whereas Dua Lipa is more about writing happy songs about girl power and getting over an unspecified ex by dancing in the club.
Obviously both have their merits because both Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift are two of the most successful musicians on the planet right now, but it will be interesting to see whether Taylor Swift claps back with a subtle dig of her own.
Or maybe she’ll leave to that the Swifties who seem to have taken Dua’s quote very personally on social media. What else is new?
