I think if you had to pick one of the biggest cultural trends of this year then the advent of AI would be pretty near the top, mainly thanks to ChatGPT coming out and making everyone who can figure out how to use it properly’s life way easier. No this article wasn’t written using ChatGPT before you ask, but you probably couldn’t tell even if it was right? That’s how good I am.

Anyway, most people are using these AI tools to make money really quickly, but there has been some concern about how fast they’re developing and how they might actually be a threat to humanity, buoyed by all those dystopian science fiction novels and books that we’ve read. Elon Musk has now added his name to an open letter from a bunch of high up people in the tech world and 1000 AI experts saying that AI development should stop immediately because of the implications towards the human race.
Here’s what the letter had to say:
AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity.
Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.
Experts need to jointly develop and implement a set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts.
Such protocols will allegedly ensure that systems adhering to them are safe beyond a reasonable doubt.
We advise a six month halt on the dangerous race in developing systems even more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT4.
Well I suppose that is slightly worrying isn’t it, considering these guys probably know what they’re talking about. The thing is, AI is such a powerful tool that’s helping so many people out right now that even if the government did end up banning it, I’m fairly sure people would just head onto the Dark Web or find some kind of workaround so that they could keep using it.
Fairly sure that the AI could also probably figure out a way that it could keep getting used as well itself. Probably in about 30 seconds as well, which I suppose is the cruz of the problem here. Scary.
For more of the same, check out this AI showing what Henry VIII would look like in 2022. Very useful.
