After all those stories about Ellen Degeneres being the biggest bully in Hollywood and the “Ellen” show being one of the most toxic workplace environments around, it seemed inevitable that Ellen’s TV career was about to go the way of the dodo.

Instead, her TV show was renewed, she issued a lame apology, never actually said sorry, and carried on as usual.

Only problem is – the show has been losing advertisers, is struggling to book A-list celebrities, and has seen a huge dip in ratings during what is usually the busiest time of year.

An Ellen show employee told Insider:

We’re trying to be a content house, but we have no content.

For the first time, everyone was starting to ask us, ‘If you have an idea, tell us because we will listen. If you have an idea for a celeb, even if they’re not A-list or famous, we’ll take anyone who will bring us numbers and eyeballs.

That’s when they started to be real with us and essentially said, ‘Give us anything because we need help.’ Our old strategy doesn’t work anymore.

One publicist told the site:

I wouldn’t set up anyone on her show right now to do anything that could possibly cause them more negative headlines.

You have to tread so carefully with your clients and your clients’ reputations, so you don’t want to put your client in any line of fire sympathizing with someone that any community or anyone would feel bad about. We’re not going to align anyone with Ellen.

Another publicist added:

The feedback we’ve been getting is that Ellen is no longer a first choice for talent. It’s not unique to one person. We’ve received feedback from other publicists as well as talent. Nobody likes feeling this emotional betrayal from someone who literally built a brand on niceness. Getting over that hump is a much bigger hurdle.

Now don’t get me wrong, I know Ellen does amazing things for animals (as a lot of her supporters point out), but the way she treats humans is absolutely diabolical. So I’m not going to lose any sleep over somebody who has looked down on and mistreated people for 20 years suddenly finding herself slipping down the Hollywood totem pole. That’s just karma doing its thing right there.

Too bad for everyone working on the Ellen show who need her around to make a living, but if the show’s current form continues then surely it won’t be long before the execs realise they made a huge mistake renewing it in the first place. Couldn’t happen to a nicer gal!
