An elephant in Thailand stabbed its 32-year-old handler with its tusk and then literally ripped him in half after it was given a heavy workload in extreme heat.
The animal, named Pom Pom (that probably didn’t help), was made to transport rubberwood at a plantation in Phang Nga province in soaring temperatures. The 20-year-old elephant eventually snapped, stabbed handler Supachai Wongfaed with its tusks and ripped him apart.
According to the Times of India, local police, the village chief, and rescue workers found Wongfaed ripped in two lying in a pool of blood.
They eventually managed to retrieve his body after livestock officers shot the elephant with a sedative dart.
Interestingly, deaths in Thailand caused by elephants appear to be on the rise, with 20 people a year being killed by the animals. Which certainly makes it sound like the elephants have had enough of being ordered around by puny humans and are rising up to do something about it. You would feel that as humans ourselves, we should be rooting for our own side here, but I’m not so sure in this case. Obviously not saying that Supachai Wongfaed deserved to die, but I do kinda see where Pom Pom the elephant was coming from. He’s a big, strong, majestic, powerful elephant FFS. As if he’s going to put up with a tiny human forcing him to lug wood around in brutally hot temperatures.
I mean what would you do if you were essentially forced into slavery like that? It’s not like Pom Pom could call a meeting with Supachai Wongfaed to discuss things so they might find a resolution. Pretty hard to do that when you’re an elephant who doesn’t speak English or Thai or sign language. So in the end, Pom Pom used what god gave him – his tusks. Does this actually make life any easier for Pom Pom in the long run? Probably not. But at least he got the day off. Hauling wood around in 35 degree heat? No thank you.
