Back when there were hardly any TV channels in the early 00s, Dom Joly’s ‘Trigger Happy TV’ was one of the most iconic comedy shows around and you couldn’t really go out without hearing someone copying his classic shouting ‘hello’ into his mobile really loudly in public places bit and thinking they were really funny. What a time to be alive.

Surprisingly, the show only lasted for three series but it’s still looked back at fondly now, so much so that it was briefly revived for a Christmas special back in 2017. Dom reckons he’s got a new idea for the show/format for 2023 though now and has revealed that he’s been developing it with producers from Channel 4.

Here’s what he had to say:

I spent a lot of time on Trigger Happy honing my skills annoying members of the public so now I’m going to take those skills and maybe take on something else.

I did a small reboot for Channel 4 before but there were two things I really wanted to do: one was a movie and the other was to try and get a completely new spin on Trigger Happy.

So it’s the same sort of comedy, same sense of humour and the same people behind it but doing it for a completely different purpose and I think we’ve come up with a completely new format so it’s really exciting.

I’m just waiting for the green light but it’s going to be a really, really cool thing.

Well, although I’ve got fond memories of the show I’m not really sure if this is the best move. Sure, sometimes reboots can actually end up being really good – ‘Scre4m’, ‘Bill And Ted’, ‘American Pie’, ‘The X Files’ (OK maybe not that last one) – and it is positive that the same people are involved for this one again, but I’m just not sure if the ‘Trigger Happy TV’ format is going to work in 2023 or if anyone is going to care because there’s so much comedy on TV nowadays anyway.

I guess I’ll read the reviews and maybe check it out, but I’ll be surprised if it even gets made to be honest. Good luck to them though, hope they prove me wrong.
