Details have been leaked showing what a Muslim registry under Donald Trump might look like, and let’s just say it does not sound good.

Kris Kobach, who is the front-runner to head up the Department of Homeland Security when Trump starts as President next year, arrived at a meeting with the President-elect with a supposedly confidential Muslim registry strategy under his arm. However, I don’t think he realised that the document was visible.
Some people are claiming it was a deliberate mistake to get the attention for what is known as the “Kobach strategic plan for first 365 days.” The proposals involve restarting a post-9/11 era security programme called Nseers (the National Securty Entry-Exit registration system), which means that men from Muslim-majority countries will be constantly checked and monitored during their time in the country.

At the time this plan was slated as it didn’t help with national security and only promoted Islamophobia further. The plan also appears to include “extreme vetting” which means questioning Muslims with regards to:
Support for Sharia law, jihad, equality of men and women, the United States Constitution.
And if that wasn’t extreme enough, it also plans on reducing the intake of Syrian refugees to zero, using authority under the 1980 Refugee Act. That is just absolutely sickening – these refugees are trying to flee their country to escape extremism, not bring it with them.
Other details that were made out include the definition of “criminal aliens” as “an alien arrested for a crime” – so even if an immigrant were to be arrested and not convicted, this would automatically render them a criminal. And further down the document, it said, “in addition to 386 miles of existing actual wall.”
It’s not definite how much, if any, of this document Donald Trump will endorse, but we do already know that it is in line with everything he has promoted so far. However, Amnesty International’s Naureen Shah said the slim proposals on the document would be enough on their own to cause her group to organise protests and added that they will create public and international pressure to make sure these kinds of proposals are untenable.
I hope so. If Trump actually puts any of these in place then it’s going to be a dark time for America, Muslims and refugees around the world. Although we’re going to be fucked anyway – Trump is a climate change denier after all.
