Everyone has been talking about the fact that a gay black man has been cast as the new Doctor Who – with reactions varying from ‘that’s great’ through ‘that’s so woke’ to ‘it’s an absolute abomination, burn it with fire’ – and I’m sure that everyone will be having a similar reaction as it was revealed today that a trans actress has been cast to play the role of Rose.

Of course, even people that have a casual relationship with the show probably know that Bille Piper played the character of Rose at the start of the latest reboot of the show, spending time with both Christoper Eccleston and David Tennent, but it’s not know if 18 year old trans actress Yasmin Finney will be playing that role or something else entirely. David Tennent is also confirmed to be returning to the show which is kinda confusing considering they’ve already cast a new Doctor, but original reboot scribe Russel T Davies – who is also coming back as showrunner – had this to say about the announcement:

Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?
You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Whoset.
We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse
And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna. What on earth is happening?
Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.
The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.
Oh yeah, forgot to say that Catherine Tate was coming back as Donna too. Wild.
Really does sound like they’re pulling out all the stops with this new series as Jodie Whitaker’s run as the Doctor has been widely panned. Time to get the big guns back in to return the show to its former heights. It might work, but there’s also the possibility this new series will turn out to be too woke for some people though with both trans and gay characters appearing in main roles? Looks like the BBC have rolled the dice.
