I don’t normally have a lot of sympathy for asshole American cops (and make no mistake, it seems like a lot of them are assholes), but on this occasion I think I’m on their side. That’s because when you’re trying to clear 350 drunk people out of a 160 capacity bar, it’s definitely not a good idea for the DJ to start playing NWA’s ‘Fuck Tha Police’ because it could quite easily turn into a full scale riot where a lot of people could get hurt.
The incident went down at Shenanigans Pub (fitting location) in Westfield, Massachusetts where a guy called DJ Boogy AKA Kashawn Harris was playing a homecoming weekend party. The establishment had requested the police come down and get people to leave because they were massively over capacity and causing a safety hazard, but they found it difficult due to all the loud music being played. Things obviously got worse when the NWA track dropped.
That caused one officer to issue DJ Boogy (pictured below) with a summons for disorderly conduct stating:
I believed at that time the combination of alcohol, the excessive amount of people in the bar and the song that the DJ chose to play at that time was an intentional act by the DJ to incite the crowd which showed a reckless disregard for public safety.

DJ Boogy – despite being found guilty and ordered to pay a $50 fine has protested his innocence, offering the following excuses:
I had no intention of inciting a riot, it was just college kids having fun.
For them to even think I was trying to start riots was frustrating for me. That’s not my kind of background, that’s not where I come from.
The song was queued up before the police arrived and a snippet was played before the music was shut down and my side of the bar had already been cleared of people by the time the song started playing anyway.
Hmm. I guess there’s no way to prove that isn’t true but DJ Boogy doesn’t sound like much of a DJ if he’s lining up his songs and not dropping and mixing them on the fly. He also sounds like a bit of a mischievous joker with a name like that so I reckon he probably did play it as it’s just the kind of thing everyone would go bat shit for, and also make him a legendary name on campus and make everyone want to book him. Not buying it Boogy, sorry.
Here’s an unreleased demo of ‘Fuck Tha Police’ too with a whole different verse in it.
