Looks like Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow won’t be returning to action for the sixth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Not to worry though, because according to reports, Disney is set to replace Depp with actress Ayo Edebiri (Bottoms, The Bear, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem).
Ayo Edebiri will reportedly play lead character Anne, based on the life of 17th century pirate Anne Bonny. As you might expect, the news hasn’t exactly gone down well with a certain section of X (including Elon Musk himself):

Anne Bonny was a fabulous Irishwoman. A historical figure many Irish love.
It would be wrong to cast a non-Irish woman in this role!
Well, yet another “go woke, go broke” film – many will boycott it just for this wrong casting.— bbuckley (@bbuckley88) February 7, 2024
I can’t wait to see Disney bankrupt.

Aye @Disney
You better f*king not. Johnny Depp is alive and perfectly well. I’ll never watch another Pirate’s movie again if yall drop this man for absolutely no reason

At this point you must assume Disney is tanking its own company on purpose.

No word on if Ayo Edebiri will head an all-female pirate ship in the movie, but it seems as though they might be marketing to a younger, more PG audience with this one.
Some of the backlash online is based around the fact that Johnny Depp won’t be involved, which is understandable because he’s so good as Captain Jack Sparrow and the Pirates franchise doesn’t exist without him, but too much of the complaining is also based around the fact that Ayo Edebiri is a black actress playing an Irish pirate.
Here’s an idea – if that bothers you so much, how about just watching Pirates 1 – 5 instead? Give Pirates 6 a miss, which most of us will do anyway because Johnny Depp won’t be in it. I mean, can you even really consider it a Pirates of the Caribbean film without the main man?
In any case, congrats to Ayo Edebiri on the massive, star-making gig. What else does Pirates 6 have in store for us? Non-binary sea monsters? Wouldn’t shock me, to be honest.
